    n. The realisation that each random passerby

is living a life as vivid and as complex as your

own - populated with their own ambitions,

friends, routines, worries, inherited craziness -

an epic story that continues invisibly around

you like an anthill sprawling deep underground,

with elaborate passageways to a thousand other

lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you

might appear only once; an extra sipping coffee

in the background, a blur of traffic passing on

the highway, a lighted window at dusk.

Makes one feel small, this. You realise that there is

much that you do not know, will never experience,

or ever have the pleasure of understanding.

I should learn to appreciate this more, I think.

  • I AlwayS think this tOo! Behind every face is a vast life with its intricacies and emotion. But to us it’s just a face that passes by. Even people we know. We take them at face value. We don’t realise inside what’s truly going on.

  • not surprised, Shiv! :)

I imagine we’d have a conversation about this walking back from uni after class. I know we’ve had stranger ones for sure hahah.

Hope you are well, Mum. much love to you and your boys, both big and small xo
